We Taste: Boston’s Best Lobster Rolls

We've tracked down Boston's best lobster rolls

If we had a dollar for every time we were asked “where can I go to get a lobster roll” we would have many, many, many dollars by now.  It’s the quintessential New England dish that keeps people coming back for me.  The summer is an especially lobster-centric season and because we are in the business of hospitality, we take it upon ourselves to do some taste testing around the city to make sure we have our claws on the very best rolls in the city…it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it.  We’ve round up our top five below:

1.) Neptune Oyster – This tiny restaurant in the North End is big on flavor which has helped it earn an even bigger following. Neptune is especially known for it’s hot, buttered, lobster roll – making it worth the inevitable wait to grab a table or at the very least a roll to-go.

Neptune Oyster

63 Salem St, Boston, MA 02113

(617) 742-3474

2.) James Hook + Co. – Located at the cusp of the Boston waterfront, James Hook is an unassuming little fish market with some excellent outdoor seating for dining al fresco. In addition to selling their infamous lobster roll, they also serve up some of the best and freshest fish and seafood in the city.

James Hook + Co

15-17 Northern Ave Boston, MA 02210

(617) 423-5501

3.) Pauli’s – Pauli’s made a splash last summer when it introduced the U.S.S. Lobstitution, a whopping 24 ounce lobster roll that has been billed as “New England’s Largest.” True, it is a bit schticky but if you’re on the hunt for lobster than really look no more.

65 Salem St, Boston

(857) 284-7064

4.) B&G Oyster – This seafood restaurant in Boston’s quaint South End is part of the Barbara Lynch culinary empire.  Honored by Food & Wine as “America’s Best Lobster Roll” B&G delivers a whole pieces of fresh lobster on a buttered brioche that will have you giving two enthusiastic claws up.

B& G Oysters

550 Tremont st, Boston

(617) 423-0550

5.) This may be completely nepotistic but we do have to a special place in our hearts for the Lobster Roll served up at the Rooftop @ Revere. Included in Esquire magazine’s 2013 Best New Restaurants issue, Revere’s Rooftop roll is served up with seasoned onion on top and homemade chips on the side – perfectly paired with that killer view of Back Bay and the south end…

A glittering and dapper dressed crowd raised nearly $400,000 to support the MSPCA’s animal protection and veterinary programs.  A number we feel deserves two very enthusiastic paws up! We spotted a few rather famous faces in the crowd, including New England Revolution soccer player, Andrew Farrell and his adorable bulldog, Rufus. EverEngaging: Wedding Saving Tips from an Expert

Cost Cutting Tips on Weddings from our Event Pro

June has become synonymous with wedding season.  A fleeting time of year when weather should be pleasantly predictable (then again this is New England) and brides clamor for a date, a venue, a dress, flowers, a band, a napkin holder, a cute little poem bridesmaid number three can read at the rehearsal dinner.  All of these things can add up (literally) so we tapped into our very own Director of Events, Kristin Jones to share some tips and tricks of the trade for how to save some green when preparing for your big day in white.
*   Ask the venue if there are lighting vendors being used for an event the night before and see if you can piggyback off delivery and set-up fees by using the same vendor
*   Alternative dessert instead of cake – i.e. a candy bar or use the dessert as the favor by packing it to-go because by this time most people are dancing anyway
*   Re-use floral elements by mixing and matching them for the rehearsal dinner, reception, and brunch
*   Be creative with the menu, for example, do small tasting plates rather than a 3 course dinner – tapas are so in right now, anyways
*   If all of your guests are not heavy drinkers, opt for a consumption bar rather than an open bar package or offer only beer and wine and one specialty cocktail as complimentary
*   Have house liquors at the bar but choose 1 or 2 types of alcohol to upgrade – for example, since vodka is so popular, upgrade the vodka only to Top Shelf (Grey Goose or Kettel One)

*   A DJ instead of a band or a crowd sourced ipod playlist from your guests is always the less expensive route

To check out more of Revere’s wedding-centric capabilities, head over to this special page on our website.
